I’m already awake when his eyes open.
I’ve been watching him for some time.
Waiting.
He runs a hand through my hair,
And I smile at him.
But I’ve been smiling for some time.
Waiting.
We leave the bed together,
And he fixes us both breakfast.
I sit and watch him cook.
Waiting.
He leaves for work after we eat,
And I count down until he returns home.
I don’t look at any screen.
I don’t look at any book.
I watch the door.
Waiting.
He is my everything.
I am nothing without him.
When he pulls into the driveway,
I sing and cry and laugh.
I was waiting.
He fixes us both dinner.
I sit and watch him cook.
He kisses me before we eat.
He washes himself after dinner,
And I sit on the couch.
Waiting.
He climbs into our bed,
And I follow him in.
He kisses me again.
He closes his eyes,
And I let myself rest for a little while.
Waiting for the next day with him.
I’m awake when his alarm goes off.
I’m awake when I listen for his breath.
I’m awake when it never comes.
I’m still waiting.
I’ll wait forever.
